Photoville Festival Brings Barbados & Mariupol to Brooklyn

Going across New York’s five boroughs and featuring a wealth of artists, visions, and stories, is the Photoville Festival. Running June 3 to the 18th, Photoville is now in its 12th consecutive year and features the Photoville Village in Brooklyn Bridge Park with photo-filled shipping containers, in addition to open-air exhibitions. Along with art exhibitions, the festival includes an array of free, virtual and in-person workshops and events to help aspiring and established photographers alike.

Photoville features exhibitions from artists around the world, each with their own theme and focus. (In)Visible Guides brings together photographer Destiny Mata and residents of a Lower East Side shelter for domestic violence survivors to explore notions of memory, safety, and loss. The installation pairs Mata’s work alongside neighborhood photography taken by shelter residents in workshops facilitated by Mata. A Love Letter To Barbados features photographic images that encapsulate the stories, the people and the powerful landscape of Barbados, the Southeastern island in the Caribbean sea. Autistic Joy aims to empower and activate change – encouraging families and communities to engage in conversations about acceptance and joy starting with how Neurodivergent children are treated, valued and seen. The Bearing Witness: Documenting War Crimes in Mariupol, Ukraine photo exhibition features the work of Mstyslav Chernov and Evgeniy Maloletka, the last journalists in the besieged city, as they photographed the siege of Mariupol from day one.
