Gary Schneider's "HandPrint Portraits, Johannesburg" Exhibit

David Krut Projects is pleased to present HandPrint Portraits, Johannesburg, a solo exhibition of recent photographs by South African-born artist Gary Schneider. Schneider has been making HandPrint portraits since 1996, but has never before had a show solely devoted to this work. This exhibition marks the first time Schneider has explored a particular community outside of his family and friends.

In July 2011, David Krut Projects, Johannesburg, presented a survey of Schneider's work; it was his first exhibition in South Africa. While in Johannesburg, Schneider set up a small darkroom at Wits University Art School where he made over 50 HandPrints of artists and other members of the creative community. This New York exhibition presents a small selection of these portraits, including large-scale handprints of Senzeni Marasela, Jo Ractliffe, William Kentridge, Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi, Frank Malaba and David Goldblatt. In December 2011, Schneider will return to South Africa to continue this typological exploration in Cape Town.

"These photographs, made without a camera, are sweat and heat imprints into film emulsion. I consider handprint portraits to be as expressive as any of a face, more private, and possibly more revealing. They do not reveal race and, often, neither gender nor age. I borrow the imprint technique from the caves of Lascaux, (the earliest know examples of self identification) the 'Shroud of Turin', Marcel Duchamp's 'Female Fig Leaf,' Yves Klein's body prints, Jasper John's 'Studies for Skin', and 19th century Spirit Photography."

Fey, Martin and Simmons Honored at 22nd GLAAD Media Awards

"I would do it at half-time of the Super Bowl," was the reply given by Tina Fey, writer/star of NBC's 30 Rock when GLAADRicky Martin, Vito Russo, GLAAD, GLBTmedia awards host Andy Cohen of Bravo posed the hypothetical question of how she would come out if she was actually a closeted lesbian. "And my Plan B would be to insert 'I'm gay' under my photo during the In Memoriam segment of the Oscars!" When she was then asked to choose a partner from a group of lesbian icons Ms. Fey chose CNN financial guru Suze Orman over MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and several others. "It's the blazer," she explained, "although I do love Rachel's hair."

Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's Ninth Annual OUTAuction NYC Held Recently

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation raised $165,000 from the auction of works by the GLAAD Top 100 Artists at its Ninth Annual OUTAuction NYC held recently at Manhattan's Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street) on Sunday November 21, 2010.

Jill Zarin (The Real Housewives of NYC) hosted the event and welcomed fellow cast members Kelly Killoren Bensimon, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, and Sonja Morgan. Other special guests attending included:

  • Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee
  • David Bromstad (HGTV's Color Splash)
  • Scott Herman (The Real World: Brooklyn)
  • Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge (The Fabulous Beekman Boys)
  • Mike Ruiz (The A-List)
  • Sheree Whitfield (BRAVO's The Real Housewives of Atlanta)

VIP Ticket holders were entered in a raffle for a chance to win a dinner with host Jill Zarin, as well as products from her bedding line, among other prizes.

Zarin has been an important GLAAD ally for many years. She was recently seen participating in Spirit Day, remembering youth who committed suicide as a result of anti-LGBT bullying

Said Zarin, "I am proud to serve as host for this year's GLAAD OUTAuction event. I know that the media plays an important role in how we view others, and I'm proud to support GLAAD's work to share powerful stories about LGBT people with all Americans."

The Ninth Annual OUTAuction, presented by Bud Light and ROKK Vodka, featured a cocktail reception, live and silent auctions as well as a VIP after party. Proceeds from the event benefit GLAAD's work to amplify the voices of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community by sharing stories of LGBT people in news, entertainment and social media.

OUTAuction NYC also featured a live auction featuring:

  • El Jardine, Pablo Picasso, 1955 (Robert John Russo Gallery)
  • Composition I, Joan Miro, 1967 (Robert John Russo Gallery)
  • Untitled Nude VII, Herb Ritts, Miami, 1997 (Herb Ritts Foundation)
  • Les Capricesas de Goya, Salvador Dali, 1977

Additional members of the honorary host committee who have lent their names in support of the event included:

  • singer/songwriter Robbie Williams
  • Randy Jackson (American Idol)
  • actor Fran Drescher
  • comedian/humanitarian Kate Clinton
  • Vicky Gunvalson (The Real Housewives of Orange County)
  • Heather McDonald (Chelsea Lately)
  • Kyra Sedgwick (TNT's The Closer)

Among the artists selected to show at the event are Brian Cyr, an openly gay artist who was discharged from the US Air Force under the now defunct "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy; Gina Garan, famous for her role in the reintroduction of the Blythe doll and her photobook This Is Blythe; Argentinean artist Mirta Kupferminc; filmmaker Jane Martin, and Manhattan-based author/photographer Alex Geana.

GLAAD's Arts Advisory Committee selected the 100 featured artists from a pool of over 350 submissions. This year's Arts Advisory Committee draws talent from leading voices in the industry, including Jaclyn Acker and Andy Fligel from Chelsea Frames, Brian English of the Herb Ritts Foundation, artist Amy Levin, Alexander and Bonin Gallery Director Oliver Newton, Wayne Snellen of The Leslie Lohman Gay Art Foundation, curator Irene Shum Allen and president of the Andy Warhol Foundation Joel Wachs.
