Seven Samurai
This July one of the most legendary film directors of all time will be screened at the Film Forum in brand new 4K restorations. Kurosawa In 4K runs July 18 to the 31st at New York’s Film Forum (209 West Houston Street) and features works of cinema from director Akira Kurosawa that have thrilled and touched the spirit for decades. Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Stray Dog, Rashomon, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, High And Low, Yojimbo, andSanjuro will all be screened with new 4K restorations.
From thrilling sword swinging epics to meditations on the human spirit, these films represent the post-war period in which Kurosawa re-shaped the world of cinema and started getting Americans to read subtitles.

New York Music Month is NYC’s official music festival held every June and kicking things off is the annual NYMM Conference. To comemorate the life of legendary director David Lynch the Metrograph theater (7 Ludlow St, New York, NY) will run an all day David Lynch marathon on February 19th. In Dreams: A David Lynch Tribute, features Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, Blue Velvet, and Wild at Heart, with the cinematographer of the two last-named films, Frederick Elmes, on hand for a Q&A and introduction—and a chance to win a prize from the Metrograph Bookstore for marathoners who go the distance.

Downtown NYC’s perennial Anthology Film Archives (32 2nd Ave) pays tribute to one of the most electrifying living actors. Wild at Heart: Willem Dafoe runs February 7th to the 26th and examines Dafoe’s work across decades with directors including Martin Scorsese (The Last Temptation of Christ), Kathryn Bigelow and Monty Montgomery (The Loveless), and David Lynch (Wild at Heart) among others.
Dafoe himself will be appearing at several screenings and the Saturday, Feb 15 screening of The Last Temptation of Christ will be followed by a very special discussion between Martin Scorsese and Willem Dafoe.
