2010 New York National Boat Show in January

Tens of thousands of boating and fishing enthusiasts start their season at the 105th New York National Boat Show held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center from January 20 - January 24, 201Boston Whaler0.
 
From yachts and cruisers to bass and pontoon boats, from canoes and kayaks to fishing boats and personal watercraft, from electronics and engines to fishing gear, from financing and insurance to travel destinations, you'll see it in the show.

Features to include:

Fish Tales Contest
Share fishing stories with fellow anglers and professional fisherman judges  and if the judges think you have the best story, you’ll walk away with a Lowrance HDS-7 Fishfinder/Chartplotter. The first place winner will also receive a $500 Gift Certificate from Global Fish Mounts towards a fish mount. Fisherman Magazine will interview and photograph the winner and publish a story about the winner's fishing experience. Second place will receive a Icom M72 VHF Handheld VHF and third place will receive a $100 West Marine Gift Card compliments of the great folks at West Marine. This contest will take place Thursday, January 21st from 6:30–7:30pm.

Traveling Nature & Maritime Museum on Wheels
The Urban Divers Estuary Conservancy's (UDEC) mobile museum -- The Enviromedia Mobile -- is making its first appearance at the show to educate about all things aquatic.  Designed to make you feel like you're on a boat, the space features a wooden planked floor and resemble a pirate's ship's hull. Inside is aquatic art, nautical artifacts, educational displays and interactive exhibits that teaches about the wildlife of our oceans and estuaries. Parents and Children can participate in a hands-on scavenger hunt and more.

She’s Geeky Tech Unconference

She’s Geeky’s 5th unconference, the third in the Bay Area, is being held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, from January 29 through 31, 2010.

“An unconference is a facilitated participant-driven face-to-face conference around a theme or purpose,” according to Kaliya Hamlin of Unconference.net.

This event is for:

* Women working in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic Fields.

• Women students of the sciences, those training to be engineers, aspiring mathematicians and technology professions.

• Women who are kernel hackers and all those who aspire to deepen their geekiness by learning how to code the php on their blogs.

• Women into their gadgets.

• Women who are SciFi fans.

• Women who are retired and used to work in tech related fields.

The agenda is created by all participants live each day. Everyone meets and posts topics they would like to present or see. Through a highly participative process, the attendees create a full day, multi-track conference agenda that is relevant and inspiring to everyone. This creates a rich assortment of agenda items and makes for an exciting day of learning.

Sessions can be a presentation, inquiry about a question or discussion about an issue or technical field.  One participant volunteers to record the proceedings. The notes from each session are collected in the newsroom, then a book is compiled with all the notes from the conference and distributed to everyone who attended.

LA Go Green Expo

Scheduled for January 22-24, 2010, the 2010 Los Angeles Go Green Expo will be held at the LEED certified Los Angeles Convention Center (1201 South Figueroa Street, South Hall J). This event is a must for anyone interested in learning about environmentally friendly goods and services for use in modern everyday living. Here is a great chance to learn how green alternatives can positively change the way each individual impacts the environment. A small change from each person added together makes a big impact. The event features more than 250 exhibitors, interactive seminars, educational workshops, an eco-film festival and a green marketplace.

Some of Ecollywood's finest will be on hand to speak, including eco-activist Ed Begley Jr. Begley’s television series, Living with Ed, highlights some of the creative and even extreme ways that Begley and his wife, Rachelle Carson, use to go green.

Other speakers scheduled to appear include:

Mariel Hemingway, who will discuss how to live a healthy lifestyle.

A.J. Ali and his wife Jane, founders of the nonprofit Marathon of Miracles (MOM), which operates social network, www.survivorcelebration.com. The organization participates in a wide variety of activities to help survivors and help end cancer.

Fernando Feldman, a veteran builder, designed and built The Go Green Home as a learning laboratory of Green Design.
 
Jackie Newgent, RD, CDN, a well-respected chef, registered dietitian, eco-cuisine expert, and author of Big Green Cookbook.

Alexandra Paul, actress and activist, has served on the board of Plug In America, and has been driving electric cars for 18 years.

Detroit Rides Again at the NAIAS

Glitzy cars and concepts, technology of the future, thousands of journalists and top governmental officials are only the front fender to the vehicle that is going to motor the world's economy during The North American International Auto Show 2010 (NAIAS) being held at Cobo Center, Detroit, Michigan, from January 11-24, 2010.

Visitors can experience the next generation of transportation with more than 700 vehicles on display, representing the most innovative designs in the world in North America's largest and most prestigious automotive showcase. A series of symposiums will be held featuring a look at the past, present and future of technologies designed to move the industry and a global economy forward.

Exhibits and features of emerging technology trends include:

Electric Avenue, a 37,000 square-foot area, presented by The Dow Chemical Company, dedicated to showcasing the latest in electric vehicles and technology by both traditional automakers and innovative entrepreneurs. The all-new exhibit area will feature nearly 20 vehicles, as well as symposiums and special events on the adjacent NAIAS stage.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) returns with The MEDC EcoXperience, which features a quarter-mile indoor ride-and-drive test track surrounded by landscaped and forested terrain. Attendees can take a ride in a variety of electric vehicles provided by various manufacturers, including avant-garde electric vehicle inventions.

MEDC is also introducing a dynamic, new exhibit, the MEDC Alternative Energy Showcase, which features ten of the most innovative alternative energy component suppliers displaying the latest battery and related technologies. Companies participating include A123 Systems, Johnson Controls-Saft, Dow-Kokam, DTE Energy and Sakti3.

Other participants include some of the nation's leading universities, such as Michigan Technological University and the University of Michigan as well as TARDEC, the nation's research lab for military energy initiatives. Department of Energy and MEDC funding for research and development activities have produced significant progress in the vital and expanding electric battery field.

Further highlights:

North American Car of the Year and North American Truck of the Year Awards – The 17th annual awards program recognizes vehicles that have become benchmarks in their respective segments. This year’s winners are the Ford Fusion hybrid and Ford Transit Connect, for top car and top truck of the year respectively.

14th Annual Urban Wheels Awards – the Urban Car, Truck and Green Vehicles selected by a panel of 15 independent auto journalists. Recognizing a commitment to minority supplier contracts in the auto industry stimulus, lifetime achievement and pioneer awards will be presented.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to celebrate the launch of DECISIVE Multimedia, the multicultural, multimedia platform that will transform the way consumers make decisions regarding new products and services.

The Gallery will provide luxury vehicle enthusiasts an opportunity to see elite vehicles in a private setting, at the MGM Grand Detroit. This is a rare opportunity to see high-end luxury vehicles showcased under one roof, which include Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Bentley, Lamborghini, Spyker, and Aston Martin.

Charity Preview – Proceeds directly benefit a wide range of children's charities, which support services for children of all ages from birth to 18.  Since 1989, the Charity Preview has raised more than $79 million for southeastern Michigan children's charities - over $35 million of which was raised in the last six years alone.
